I retired from URI in September of 2021. However, for financial reasons due to an unexpected divorce, I returned to work at URI in December of 2022 . Under RI General Law 36-10-36 even though my position qualifies for retirement benefits because I retired, I am not permitted to receive retirement benefits. In addition, my pension funds are suspended until I retire again. This law was created in 1994 when the economic climate was very different. I believe the law is outdated and needs to be changed to assist people like myself who for financial reasons have to return to work. My pension is very small and my salary is modest. Given our country’s economic climate with people living longer and requiring more funds for retirement and possibly having to return to work after retirement, I was wondering if this is something that could be looked into by the Pension Advisory Working Group. RI General Law 36-10-36 already has two exceptions as you can see below. Some job titles such as working at a nonprofit senior center or as a janitor for a municipality do not have a reduction in pension benefits. I would like to petition for another exception to this law to include employees like myself with very small pensions and modest salaries.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Cynthia Candon
